Bettors Want Competitive Races; Not Speed

- I grew up in Vernon NY. Knew some horseman. A friend of mines father owned a few pacers.
- My friend told me that you will see a big longshot come in when it's KNOWN barn is struggling...hay bill etc..( please no offense intended in anyway this was 40 years ago approximately...)
- I mention this because I watch some really stupid stuff out on track sometimes.. RHYME OR REASON ??? Matter of opinions....bomb comes in. They tally the mutuals...and it's a memory and on to the next race....
- I agree with Lonnie almost 100%... except who wants to burn there horse going first over and challenging to the point out of top 5...in end result.??
- I think it's very much important to pick and choose which races to wager...alot can happen out there...
- Driver tendencies...post position that driver in .. willingness to push pace...that plays in as well in projecting pace I've found.

If a horse isn't going to be competitive, it shouldn't be entered.

Quote from 1968jackpot on November 28, 2025, 3:07 PMI agree with Lonnie. Competitiveness is a must. I from punters aspect expect that....it is supposed to go along with baseball ..apple pie and Chevrolet..
I am aware this is no new subject... competitiveness....goal to win or goal to grab share of purse....I am not versed..nor experienced enough to go further with any opinion.
Pace projection however...that's a different subject....

Quote from Purple Aura on November 28, 2025, 4:56 PMYears ago when Red Mile raced Grand Circuit at night Campbell wired the field at a decent price. They dq'ed him because he went to slow to the half. Can't remember the name of the horse he was a sire for only a year or two. Really pissed me off. I bet him and it was the first time I had ever seen a guy on lead dq'ed because the pace wasn't quick enough.
Think he was 2yo pacer. The horse's name had Q's in it I think. OK off to hockey and some Churchill Grade2 racing later.
Eqqus???? Something like that

Quote from Bgtolex25 on November 29, 2025, 7:08 AMReally good discussion by all. Not a bettor usually as many of you know. Probably would have been if the right characters influenced me as a young person, instead the horses won me over.
Doesn’t surprise me about the old days corruption. When big money was involved with manipulating a race, there was always someone willing to compromise integrity for a payout. And our underworld friends in NY, Chicago and Youngstown/Cleveland areas were thick into the manipulating game. They could be pretty persuasive in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. For those of you in tune with the current scene, is there generally enough $ in the pools for the criminals to corrupt the action? Honest question because I have no idea.
