Favorite Harness Horse(s)

Quote from Lonnie on August 9, 2024, 1:14 PMWho are some of your favorite harness horses?
I'll start with my Top 10 (loosely in order of favoritism):
- Niatross - The GOAT. I followed him everywhere in his three-year-old campaign.
- Seatrain - It was just something about him that made him an instant favorite
- Nickawampus Leroy - The best closer I've ever seen
- Annrocs Dream - Something about her. She took on all comers
- Silk Stockings - Boys? Girls? Mattered not with this one
- Fly Fly Solly - Just a game son of a gun
- Armbro Fleming - This one will be on no one's list but mine. Partial towards him because I owned him (in partnership). He gave everything he had every time he raced
- Nihilator - Because he was from the first crop of Niatross, and was just a great racehorse
- Fan Hanover - There's something about girls who can beat up boys!
- Pershing Square - Also from the first crop of Niatross. He almost won the Little Brown Jug over Nihilator. It was thisclose.
Your turn!

The two most exciting races I have ever seen were the 1980 Meadowlands Pace when Niatross overcame breaks in his prior two starts (falling over the rail at Saratoga and a speed break in the elimination for the Meadowlands Pace - might have been his greatest race ever the way he fought back to quality by finishing 4th). It was heart-pounding the way he came down the stretch in the Meadowlands Pace.
The other horse and race that gave me even more goosebumps, thanks to Roger Houstons' call ("If you have never been on your feet, you better get up now!"), on the undercard of the 1985 Little Brown Jug in an Invitational Pace when Falcon Seelster was destroying the teletimer to set a new world record on a half-mile track of 1:51). To view the race, click here.
Even to this day, watching either of those two races, and horses, gives me goosebumps.

Quote from Bgtolex25 on August 10, 2024, 8:45 PMMy list is void of any horses in the 90’s thru mid 00, because I was totally off the grid in respects to harness racing?
70’s Falcon Almahurst because I worked at the farm where he stood stud. He was a gorgeous horse. Saw him win his Jug elimination in then WR time in 78 and watched his son, BJ Scoot win it all in 88.
80’s Cam Fella - gritty and great. His blood courses many of the great pacers of today
2000’s - Somebeachsomewhere, bred and raised by an acquaintance. Perfectly engineered racing body. Most influential pacer ever, in my opinion.
2010’s - Captaintreacherous, because he was supposed to be great and was in an extremely deep crop of colts. Tough as he was talented.
Current - Karl, because I now appreciate trotters (thanks A Mac) and Nancy Takter is an unbelievable front person for the sport.
All time favorite, Rambling Willie. The horse that God loved. He was from my home area in Ohio, and I got to see him up close numerous times in his retirement years.

Quote from Bgtolex25 on August 14, 2024, 9:24 AMNo, I just have Casanova Hall right now. Going lightly this first year, but I hope to get at least one trotting filly yearling this fall. Currently studying my Ohio catalogs and ranking the pedigrees, so I can jump in when A Mac makes the purchases. Luckily, I am entertained following all TheStable’s horses, while I ease my way back in.

Good luck with Casanova Hall!
Anthony's daily videos, which are sometimes a double or triple feature, are like a soap opera. They suck you in. I can't look away! And though it's usually just a few hours, or at most a day, between videos, I find myself smashing the refresh button to get my next fix in the never-ending saga into the horses, and into his life.
