Look at your new gelding's last superfecta payout, 551-1 odds on a straight .20 ticket with a total pool of $12,193.49 and that is with him as the even money on top. Point being, you buy fractions, get deeply involved with your horse and their competition, you cherry pick their races, then you might just have the next exacta cold, tri and super cold, or as few combos as needed and take down a sizeable amount of that $12k pool one day with as little as a negligible risked monies:

I was a degenerate gambler at one time. I'm more like that alcoholic from cheers that ran a bar. That guy I mentioned, his friends were a lot of fun to hang out with. They were also extremely dangerous to themselves and everyone around them.
I do not think that anyone is risking life and limb in fractional at any level of any degenerate gambler (from what is shared over the years). The DG typically survives on fast food gambling and races. Wants to own nothing ever, and actively tries to lose everything.
I think your analogy is flawed at any extreme of the 2. My answer would be no.
