Road Trip: Memento Mori and Tenacious Hanover

Page 1 of 2Next

The car is gassed up.

The tires are filled up.

And, we are pumped up!

Two-thirds of the New York Connection will be leaving from New York City tomorrow morning to make our way to Northfield Park on Wednesday night.

All we have to do is weather the elements and not let Dan Noble snow on our parade.

We'll be staying in Youngstown, OH, to rest up and to recover after the races.  If the timing is right, we may catch a race or two at the thoroughbred track, Mahoning Valley in Youngstown.

I can barely handicap harness racing, and thoroughbred handicapping is such a mystery to me.  I have attached the racing form for Wednesday and Thursday (purchased by accident), the Daily Racing Form.

I need to make a two-dollar bet each day to be refunded for those purchases.  If anyone can give me a tip for either or both days, at least I won't be betting blind.  And, I won't hold you liable if your selections run out.

Thank you in advance!

May the racing Gods be with us!

Going to Miami Valley on Thursday? I was going, then realized I have a 9am dental appointment on Friday. Hopefully Mortlach wins without me/us.

In for the late daily double and then a drive to Youngstown. Good luck. The Noble late DD will probably have a crazy low possible payout. Should get some decent odds on your two.

Sadly no. But it would have been fun. Despite the 20/1 morning line.

Hopefully, Mori will be the pocket rocket.

Question is will Anthony get through customs in time to drive them.

Hopefully no more leaving wallet at the gas pump. I'm not seeing any good subs, no hopefully he makes it through.

I've never been to Mahoning in Jan, usually Nov.  I've always seen a group of guys in red jackets, I think Poole Racing on the back, at a table on ground floor. Been there each time I have. I make it about once a year for the past 5 years.

One my annual Nov trip out east, it is usually Northfield, Mahoning, Mountaineer, The Meadows, Charles Town. ( I've also hit Penn National, Philly, Laurel)

I hope you guys have a great time and I see you in the winners circle tomorrow night.

I hope you didn't go. I see races cancelled after the 9th. I watched the first few, looked like big flakes and later I could not tell what was coming down.  If you did go, hopefully better weather for Mahoning. Pretty Eyes and Threepoint at The Meadows tomorrow. Just stay a few extra days for Time on Saturday.

Weatherman here predicted maybe an inch of snow. He was off by six inches. I agree with Al, hope you stayed home Lonnie. At least the weatherman got the temperature dive right. Thank god, eyeroll. Did the AMac plane make it to Cleveland? Just got half the shoveling done. Getting old have to do it in stages now. Good luck to Morlach today!!!!!!

I watched on TV, AMac get a third with ThreepointBC (33-1) and a 9th with PrettyEyes (another break at the gate) So he is back.

Luckily for me yesterday's snow started as rain, I only had 1-2 inches to shovel.

Long story short. We were going to stay in Youngstown for the night.

We arrived in Youngstown and stopped at Mahoning Valley Racetrack and caught the last two races.  Seeing that the forecast started to deteriorate we canceled that booking and found a place near Northfield Park. Got there at 5:00 PM and at literally that instant the rain changed to snow.

We crashed in the room until we made our way to the track and arrived just as the 9th race ended.

You know the rest of that story.

That was only half the story. We are very very lucky. Very long story short we came to a dead stop, still 333 miles from home on our return drive on Thursday. Half a mile ahead of us was a 35-vehicle pile up. Right behind us a muli-vehicle pileup.

11 hours and 45 minutes later we got home. Just in time to watch Mortlach.  The perfect ending to a perfect trip.

We vowed never to make this trip again in the winter.  If you remember last winter we drove to Woodbine Mohawk where they canceled the remainder of the card after six races.  Our horse was in the ninth.
