I love Love LOVED heat races.  That's what separates standardbreds from any other horse race.  A true test of the horse.  And at times, they reveal some very good odds in the Finals when a horse got locked in in the first heat.

I would draw the line at two heats.  In the event that that a horse doesn't win two heats, the winner would be declared based on the placings.  i.e. a horse finishing 1-2 would be declared the winner of a horse that finished 3-1.

What are your thoughts?

It's not a lot of time to handicap, a challenge but doable.  There is usually no past performance of horse's racing same day because like you said it is not prevalent.

If  they bring it back, and do it often (building a past performance), yes, sure, if they don't do it often, fine still, I just won't wager on it.

I'm not sure trainers / owners are seeking to push their horses unnecessarily.  The breeders might like it, not sure.
