For my purposes as a non-owner I use this site below to run pedigree queries typically on MSW, Maiden Claiming, young horses ie 2 yo's that possibly broke their maiden and heading into longer races, Turf races of the same mentioned and horses that may of never run on the turf. For breeders an invaluable resource.

This site has been around for quite sometime, and information added might take you back to the 1600's to up to date.
Let's check out Secretariat:

Now if you want to put any horse in, just make sure it is spelled correctly, it is not case sensitive. You start with the field on the top left: Horse: and then hit enter
Now looking at Secretariat, let's hover over the: 
(Top left) This will show you any added history on the horse - Owner, breeder, WPS records, earnings, race records, comments, birth / death history, breeding history, accolades, scroll down and see 5 generations of sire and damn lineage....and you can click on any and take it back even further. I like to go first dam, second dam, third dam, then look at the sire of the horse in question.
This here (also top left) shows the horse's image, if it is not there there has been no image uploaded.
Now if you hover your mouse over: Reports (also top left), a drop down will appear and you can left click on: Progeny and all that horses if they had any offspring will appear.
I love this site, and it is very accurate, not 100%, but pretty close.
You want to see if the horse sire and dam races and won as 2 yo's, have had offspring doing the same, if their offspring produced better mares, fillies, colts, horses, geldings. Who owns what, who bred what - full brother and sisters to champions and are they owned by the same people that owned the champion....
It's endless, but when there is little to no past performance you will find this immensely informational, and possibly profitable. I just copy and paste the name of the horse from my past performances in the search and go to town. Sometimes you'll find the horse has changed names or it won't be there at all, don't fret you can always put the sire and then the dam and build your own history of what they all done and produced. 🙂
