Grand Prix De L'UET

Yesterday October 11th the best 4 year old trotters of Europe gathered in Turin, Italy.
It was a racecard filled with great stakes like the Italian Derby and Oaks for 3 year old trotters and the UET Elite Circuit Final. But to me, the UET Derby as the Grand Prix De L'UET is commonly known is the highlight. The eliminations for this race are always held in Vincennes and Solvalla and the final changes location each year.

For the first time in my memory there was a third elimination in the host country (Italy). The five elimination winners - Milady Josselyn (Ready Cash), Guglielmo Jet (Maharajah), Maestro Vrie (Village Mystic), Mellby Narrow (Maharajah), and Fragolino Rosso (Booster Winner) - drew the five inside posts behind the gate.

The favourite was the German horse Fragolino Rosso. The Dutch trained colt was particularly impressive winning his Vincennes elimination. Fresh of a victory in the German Derby, the son of Booster Winner was looking to remain undefeated this year.ย

And unbeaten he remained. As Guglielmo Jet toook the lead Fragolino Rosso took it a little more easy. With a lap to go the Dutch driver Robin Bakker (Who drove Gio Cash in the International Trot this year) went 3 wide to appear next to the leader. After a full lap in the first over position he put away Guglielmo Jet who made a break as soon as Fragolino Rosso passed him. The winning time was a 1:54.3 mile rate over 2100m. The winning connections took home half of the โ‚ฌ400.000 purse. ($446,878 / $223,406)
In the words of the German commentator after winning the German Derby; "What a monster!"

ย  Monster indeed. Cool to see, thanks for sharing. What was the guy on the 1 doing? Sucking along for a piece then decides to try and go three wide top of the stretch?ย
