Were not likely to go to the Breeder's Crown this year. Next year we go together!!

Breeder's double header this year. Crown at Scioto and Cup the following weekend in Lexington.

A couple of photos from upstairs at The Red Mile on Sunday.  The first is the photo finish tech pulling up a finished, enlarged look at a dead heat outcome.  The judges are on the other side of the wall watching the process on a large screen monitor and making the verdict.

The other photo is of the 4 staff in the judges room.  Presiding Judge on right, staff that posts the race order on the TV monitors, and the two associate judges.  Standing on the left and watching with binoculars as field goes down backside is Hall of Famer, Dave Magee.  Al is probably most familiar with his driving in the Chicago area.

This is amazing!  I had no idea how rigurous the judging is.  Does every track have that many employees?

This should be publicized how well scrutinized each race is. I would feel more empowered knowing that racing is so well protected.

Thank you for sharing!

Yes, familiar with Dave Magee.

I actually met him last year at Corbin.

My second day there a lady came up to me and asked if i was an owner or trainer. Stating the judges noticed me being there for two days (second day there were less than 10 fans, first day maybe 20). I said no just a fan. She asked if I wanted to meet the judges. I went into the booth. One of the judges was from Minnesota, from pic does not look he is at The Red Mile. When he found out I was from the Chicago area, he stated you must know Dave Magee. I felt like an idiot not recognizing him.

Casey Larson is the Presiding Judge, sitting on right in photo.  He was up in MN at Running Aces, so it probably was him.  Last year was his first in KY.  Jeff James is the other associate along with Dave Magee.  Ed likely saw a great deal of Jeff’s driving up in Michigan.

That was a cool move by the Corbin people bringing you to the judges stand.  When I was up at Hilliard, Ohio this summer shadowing their team, one of the associates went around to the people in the stands and invited them in for a behind the scenes look.  That gesture really had an impact on the people who took advantage of the opportunity.  The Red Mile management did a similar thing this past Sunday evening.

Need to check my glasses. Yes, that looks like the guy I met last year.

Lots of Jeff James stories. Have the statue of limitations past? You know the James family owned Albatross, right?

Photo of Nezuko Kamado S finishing her warm-up, and she went on to win the 80,000 division of the Championship Series later in the evening in 1:51.1.  Jailbird Jog was a hard trying 5th.

In a non-betting field of 3 in the 3 year old colt $80,000 Championship Series, Sea Bistro Hanover, a brother to the hot, young sire Pebble Beach, scorched his final quarter in 24.1.   We are getting very close to thoroughbred type speeds.

Tonight was a fund raising night for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lexington, featuring inflated dinosaur races.  Good crowd, but it sure dragged the first half of the card.  I had to leave after the first 9 races took a brutal 3 1/2 hours to complete.

I was/am watching the races on FanDuel, Gabe kept stating the pace will up after the Dinosaur races. There were some epic falls.

Great win by Degas.

Yeah, I was home eating a late dinner by the time Degas went to the post.  Dang, I would have been in the winners circle with Degas, Cathy, Yannick and an enthusiastic group of young men who must have made friends with Yannick.  They joined him after each win and brought some genuine enthusiasm.

Glad that AMac and Yannick have seemingly worked out an arrangement with this Commonwealth Series run.   Degas should be securely in the final with still one more leg to go.

Yeah, I deserve to be called out.  Evenings at The Red Mile are the best.  It was a beautiful night, and I really had no need to leave early other than I was hungry and 99% of the time won’t eat out…

Let me share an interesting interaction that I had on the way out.  I stopped on the apron to take some pictures with my I-pad.  A patron sitting in his scooter was parked right next to the track.  He watched me for a few minutes and then asked if my “scanner” was communicating with the horses’ microchips, controlling them to speed up or slow down on my command.  He said that he has a similar device that affects racing greyhounds.  Anyway, I showed him the pictures that I had just taken and managed to turn the conversation toward a more positive recounting of my appreciation of Standardbreds.

We ended up having a good 15 minute interaction.  Makes one wonder what else we can learn from talking with the attendees.  This gentleman stated that he attends every Sunday night and Wednesday afternoon throughout the meet.  He does a $2 box on the numbers 2,3, and 5 every race at the beginning of the card and just sits back and watches.  He hit on races 8 and 13 that night and claims to roughly break even overall.  His entertainment.
